Rafael Colón Morales (1945-2021), the artist/creator is described as; He distinguished himself in painting in the seventies, interested in experimenting with media and techniques, especially the one he developed with the application of layers of acrylic polymers that he later subtracts to create textures and chromatic transparencies in his work.
The academic preparation of Rafael Colón Morales was very diverse and enriching: Studies in Graphic Arts at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, Spain (1965-1966); Graduate Studies at American University, Washington DC (1964) and a Bachelor of Arts, University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus.
The academic work of the teacher Rafael Colón Morales was tireless: curator of the Pre-Columbian Phase (1995-1996): Museum of Puerto Rican Art and Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, (1995); professor at the Art Students League, (1989-1991); director and curator at El Barrio International Gallery, New York (1984-1989); curator at El Museo del Barrio, New York (1988-1989); interim director at the Museo del Barrio, New York (1980-1983); Lecturer and Museum Guide at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1978-1981); Professor of Printmaking at The Art School, El Museo del Barrio, New York (1972-1976).
He was a professor of Puerto Rican art history at Brookling Community College, New York (1968-1971); art professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus (1968-1971) and art professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Arecibo Campus.
Background
Painter/Curator born in 1945, Trujillo Alto Puerto Rico. Studied at Universidad de Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras, at American University Washington DC and at Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando Madrid, Spain. He has been Professor at Universidad de Puerto Rico, Brooklyn Community College, and the Art School from el Museo del Barrio, both in New York.
During the 70s, he made a name for himself through painting, interested with the experimentation of mediums and techniques, especially with the one developed with the application of layers of acrylic polymers which he then removes to create textures and chromatic transparencies in his work. His expressive vocabulary wavers between figuration and attraction in recreating sceneries loaded with profound mystery and a deep metaphysical significance.
Artist Statement
Over the years, his creative process has been diverse but consistent in the continuous pursuit of ideas and technical possibilities. He developed a self-imagery in a particular way, by applying layers of matte or transparent acrylic (which he calls "skins" or “Pellejos” in spanish) on the pictorial surface, especially on canvas. This technique is only part of the components of his present series "Visitando a los Maestros".
Colón Morales has been a student of the Masters, that’s why the approach to the works is varied. The artist studies them from his own perspective; the idea always precedes the process. This course attains more than a stylistic presence or copy of any work, an interpretation or re-creation of the painting itself. His appreciation, for many years, of Caravaggio’s paintings, stands out in his new work based on a detail of the Conversion of Saint Paul.
